No one app can do it all for everyone, no matter how well-designed. As technology has evolved, so too have the needs of advocates, activists and researchers who document information that is critical for justice and accountability. Human rights defenders should be able to take advantage of whatever combination of tools suit the task at hand best.
Furthermore, they should be able to do so in the confidence that these tools will function well together and meet certain standards — even if they were developed by different organisations.
It’s for this reason that we at HURIDOCS aspire to co-create an ecosystem of interoperable human rights tools, experimenting alongside our peers to integrate their apps, platforms and services with the open-source ones that we create. As developers and as members of the movement for human rights, we must do our part to ensure that human rights defenders have what they need to do their work effectively.
