Database of UPR Recommendations and Voluntary Pledges

The Database of UPR Recommendations and Voluntary Pledges brings together documentation produced by the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

The Database of UPR Recommendations and Voluntary Pledges brings together documentation produced by the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a mechanism of the Human Rights Council through which all UN member states evaluate each other’s human rights record. It was developed by UPR Info and updated with support from HURIDOCS.

You can search for recommendations and voluntary pledges by various criteria, including:

  • human rights issue
  • response of the country in question
  • the type and specificity of action being recommended
  • the state, regional group or organisation making the recommendation
  • the state under review
  • and more

The database is available in English and French.

Smarter technology for smarter human rights work

It’s important that recommendations coming out of the Universal Periodic Review are made available to local activists in a timely fashion so that they can monitor that change does indeed happen in their countries.

In 2019 and 2020, HURIDOCS partnered with UPR Info to build a solution that would allow their small team to work more efficiently, ensuring that the database was always up-to-date with the latest documentation from the Universal Periodic Review. One way we accomplished this was by integrating machine learning features that makes highly accurate suggestions for how to categorize information.
