HURIDOCS attended Team CommUNITY’s Global Gathering in Estoril, Portugal which was held from 27 to 29 September 2024. We were thrilled to reconnect with the digital rights community and cherished the opportunity to say hi to friends and allies to build new connections and explore potential synergies. Global Gathering is the new iteration of the former Internet Freedom Festival (IFF) – a membership network that brings together digital defenders from across the globe fighting surveillance, censorship, and other issues sitting at the intersection of human rights and technology.

HURIDOCS hosted a booth where we shared key developments about our flagship tool Uwazi, as well as showcased its integration with the mobile app Tella, developed by our long-term partner Horizontal. We were delighted to meet new people and groups who are eager to learn more about what we do and how we support the human rights community with essential technology and strategic advice on standards and methodologies for human rights documentation and information management.

We also took the opportunity to participate in a variety of circles and conversations centred around key challenges and issues related to the interaction of digital security and technology. From the implications of AI for technology for good to advancing digital security training skills, we took the most out of the three days of meaningful engagement with other technologists, advocates, activists and digital security trainers present at the event.

HURIDOCS also participated in the OrgSec Village, a Global Gathering satellite event focusing on a range of topics, including building sustainability in security adoption, handling advanced threats, assessing the security of civil society actors, and utilising various tools and resources to enhance digital security. Along with our colleagues from across the globe, we discussed the importance of preparing our organisations for AI, mapped out organisational security gaps and needs, identified strategies for mutual support, and explored new digital security resources created by community members.
