Uwazi refreshed: A new chapter for the open-source documentation platform

After years of growth, Uwazi has a refreshed visual identity, transparent pricing, and a renewed commitment to making it accessible for everyone who relies on it.

By HURIDOCS Team on

Since 2017, Uwazi has grown alongside the organisations that use it, from a tool built with and for human rights defenders to a platform trusted by 350+ partners, 550+ databases, and over 5,200 users across the world, including journalists, researchers, and other organisations defending human rights and working in the public interest. This new chapter, which includes a new identity, a new website, transparent pricing, and the Uwazi Docs platform, is a reflection of that journey.

“Uwazi is more than a documentation tool. It is a digital infrastructure for the public interest, transforming fragmented documents, testimonies, and records into trustworthy knowledge that organisations around the world use for accountability, advocacy, and decision-making. As that work grows in urgency, so does our responsibility to make Uwazi as clear, accessible, and sustainable as possible.”

– Danna Ingleton, HURIDOCS Executive Director

The new Uwazi identity and website design draw inspiration from the print industry, echoing the tactile feel of old archives and the timeless value of documentation. Its visual language pays homage to the legacy of paper and ink, central to HURIDOCS’ four-decade heritage of shaping human rights information management tools and methodologies. This refresh weaves archival aesthetics into a modern digital interface, a design that bridges past and present, showing continuity in purpose. This approach reflects an identity that honours history while constantly innovating. Uwazi’s identity embodies the spirit of building new tools for the community, rooted in decades of collective knowledge and trust.

New pricing plans: A commitment to transparency and inclusion

The new identity comes alongside another significant change: Uwazi now has clearly defined pricing plans: Free, Starter, Professional, and Advanced, making it easier for organisations of all sizes and budgets to plan and get started. Special non-profit pricing is available across all paid plans. A self-hosted option remains at no cost, and organisations with specific or larger-scale needs can discuss a bespoke plan with the team. These plans reflect a commitment to transparency and inclusion, opening Uwazi up to more organisations than ever before.

Expert support from the HURIDOCS team

Uwazi is developed and maintained by HURIDOCS, an international NGO based in Geneva with more than 40 years of experience. Beyond the platform itself, the HURIDOCS Team offers a range of services to help organisations get the most out of Uwazi, from needs assessment and implementation to capacity building, secure hosting, and applied machine learning. Whatever your starting point, the team works alongside you to find the right solution for your context and needs.

Explore what is possible with Uwazi

The new Uwazi website is designed to help you understand exactly what the platform can do for your work. The features page walks you through every stage of the documentation workflow, from collecting and organising information to analysing and publishing it. It also covers Uwazi’s machine learning tools, built to handle time-consuming tasks and free your team to focus on turning information into action. And the use cases page shows how organisations around the world are already putting Uwazi to work in real, public projects.

Machine learning features

Uwazi continues to evolve. As the platform grows, so does its potential, reaching organisations and changemakers beyond the human rights sphere who need reliable tools to manage and make sense of complex information, save time and focus on impact. Machine learning (ML) remains at the heart of that development. All the pricing plans exclude machine learning features, and our team is ready to discuss custom options with you that save both time and costs.

Here are examples of how others are already using Uwazi’s ML:

  • Global Torture Index used Uwazi’s ML features to automatically process 60,000 paragraphs across 310 reports, identifying 15,000 relevant findings at a scale that would be impossible to achieve manually.
  • CYRILLA reduced metadata assignment from up to three hours per document to a near-automated process using Uwazi’s topic classification feature, which suggests relevant labels and learns over time.
  • SOS-Defenders automatically translated 800 detention records into five languages during a pilot phase, with the feature now supporting over 20 languages across 23 countries.
  • UPR Info reduced the time needed to update their recommendations database after each review cycle from two to three months to just one week.

This is the kind of work HURIDOCS’ team is continuing to build on.

A new platform to guide your work

Another exciting development is Uwazi Docs, the new and revamped product documentation platform where you can find updated tutorials, guides, and references to better organise and share your data. Uwazi Docs helps you to build your collection progressively, find solutions to problems, consult technical specifications and help you understand concepts and design decisions.

What’s next with Uwazi

HURIDOCS is working on new features and improvements designed to make Uwazi more powerful for everyone who relies on it. In the pipeline is a complete overhaul of the data layer, a redesign of the relationships model, improved data visualisations, a new user interface and customisable design themes. Stay tuned as we navigate this next chapter of Uwazi!

Uwazi has always been about more than a tool. It is digital infrastructure for organisations doing work that matters, and this new identity is a reflection of that commitment, built to last and designed to grow.

We would love to show you what Uwazi can do. Book a demo and see it in action.
