The Atlas of Torture is an online hub for information about torture and ill-treatment. It was developed by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights with support from HURIDOCS.
The database compiles laws, reports, standards, handbooks, educational materials and more, all of which can be filtered in several ways, including:
- theme
- group of people affected
- source of information
- region
- year of publication
A submission form allows anyone in the anti-torture movement can contribute new documents to the collection.
The Atlas also includes a map of different initiatives against torture and ill-treatment across the world as well as a forum for experts and professionals from the field of torture prevention to collaborate.
Facilitating the sharing of knowledge across borders
Although it is absolutely prohibited under international law, torture is still a reality in many parts of the world today. To finally eradicate the practice, it’s critical that people in the global movement against torture cooperate and share their hard-won learnings with each other.
With this in mind, HURIDOCS partnered with the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights in 2019 to expand their Atlas of Torture project. Read more about our collaboration here: “Atlas of Torture fosters a more collaborative movement to prevent ‘one of the most serious human rights violations’“
