Join the HURIDOCS Board: Call for new Board members

HURIDOCS is seeking new Board members to help us shape the future of human rights documentation.

By HURIDOCS on

HURIDOCS (Human Rights Information and Documentation Systems) is looking for new members to join our Board of Directors.

For over 40 years, HURIDOCS has worked at the intersection of human rights documentation and technology. We have played a key role in developing methodologies and standards that help civil society organisations document, structure, and preserve evidence of human rights violations in ways that are credible, usable, and secure.

Building on this foundation, our work today combines documentation expertise with open-source technology. Through tools like Uwazi, we support organisations around the world to manage and make sense of large and complex human rights datasets, ensuring that information can be used effectively for advocacy, accountability, justice, and memory.

Our support and tools have made a difference. We have supported war crimes tribunals, truth commissions, fact-finding efforts, human rights defenders, and multiple accountability and justice mechanisms across dozens of countries, and we continue to develop new and innovative ways to hold perpetrators accountable and to demand truth and justice in pursuit of building a rights-respecting world.

As the role of technology continues to evolve, particularly with the rise of AI, we are working to ensure that both the methodologies and the tools used by civil society remain ethical, independent, and grounded in human rights principles.

We are an international organisation with a globally distributed team and Board, and we are seeking to strengthen our Board with individuals who are excited to engage with these challenges and support the organisation through its next phase.

What we are looking for

We are particularly interested in individuals who bring experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Human rights, international justice, or civil society movements
  • Documentation practices, research methodologies, or evidence-building approaches
  • Technology, data governance, or AI, particularly in the contexts of the above two points
  • Nonprofit leadership and governance
  • Fundraising and philanthropic engagement
  • Legal, financial, or governance expertise

We are also looking for people who are:

  • Motivated by the role of documentation and technology in advancing human rights
  • Thoughtful, engaged, and willing to actively contribute to an independent, global organisation
  • Comfortable working across cultures and geographies
  • Motivated by the role of documentation and technology in advancing human rights

We strongly encourage applications from individuals based in the Global South and from communities underrepresented in global governance spaces.

What the role involves

HURIDOCS Board members play a key role in:

  • Providing strategic guidance and governance oversight
  • Supporting the organisation’s sustainability and fundraising efforts
  • Acting as ambassadors for HURIDOCS and its mission
  • Engaging in key organisational discussions and decisions

Board members are required to:

  • Attend a minimum of four online board meetings per year
  • Participate in additional meetings or smaller committees as needed
  • Join one in-person Board retreat per year, funding permitting

Board members serve a four-year term and may be reappointed for one additional consecutive term, for a maximum of eight years.

This is a voluntary (unpaid) position.

Why join the HURIDOCS Board

Board members have the opportunity to help shape the future of human rights documentation and infrastructure while engaging with a global network of practitioners, technologists, and advocates. They contribute to building independent alternatives to Big Tech for civil society and become part of an organisation that is actively exploring responsible uses of AI in human rights work.

How to express interest

If you are interested in joining the HURIDOCS Board, we would love to hear from you.

Please send a short expression of interest and CV to hello@huridocs.org

We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis, with the aim of appointing new Board members in June 2026.
